About Mary Lou Retton: At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles Retton became the first U.S. woman to win a Gold Medal in the All-Around gymnastic competition. She also won a Silver Medal as part of the U.S. Team, a Silver in the Vault and Bronze in the Floor Exercise and Uneven Bars. Her five medals in 1984 were the most of any Olympic Athlete. Sports Illustrated magazine named Retton Sports Illustrated Sportswoman of the Year in 1984
